3 October 1908

On this day 100 years ago the Football Association announced the squad of 18 players for the Great Britain team for the 1908 Olympic Games due to take place shortly. As can be seen this was effectively an England Amateur squad, with players from the other Home Nations not considered. With the exception of Crabtree every player was either a current or future England Amateur international.

The squad was as follows:

Goalkeepers: HP Bailey (Leicester Fosse); RG Brebner (Stockton); Full Backs: WS Corbett (Birmingham); Herbert Smith (Oxford City); AE Scothern (Oxford City); Half Backs: KRG Hunt (Wolverhampton Wanderers); FW Chapman (South Nottingham); Corporal W Daffern (Depot Battalion, Royal Engineers); RM Hawkes (Luton Town); AH Bell (Woking); Forwards: A Berry (Oxford University); VJ Woodward (Tottenham Hotspur); W Crabtree (Blackburn Crosshill); H Stapley (Glossop); TC Porter (Northern Nomads); C Purnell (Clapton); HP Hardman (Northern Nomads & Manchester United); GH Barlow (Wigan Grammar School Old Boys).
