On 3 July 1908 the death occurred of the Southampton centre forward, George Smith.
The following obituary appeared in Birmingham’s Sporting Mail on the following day:
“The death took place last night at Southampton of George Smith, the centre-forward of the Southampton Club. He had only been ill a few days, the cause of death being pneumonia, [...]
